Legacy technology for radiation detection

Photomultiplier tubes (“PMT”)

Handcrafted glass PMTs are used to convert light into electrical signals. Such tubes are fragile, have high quality variability and require high-voltage for operation.  There are only few tube manufacturers worldwide.

Proportional counters & GM tubes (“Geiger counter”)

These counters convert ionization charge into electrical signals. This technology requires high-voltage and is sensitive to vibration.
