Arktis’ main expertise lies in the development of a platform technology for fast neutron and gamma radiation detection and readout electronics. Arktis also offers consulting services in the field of threat mitigation, radiation shielding and health physics to businesses and governments.
Detector Modules
Arktis offers its technology as evaluation kits, optimized for either gamma or neutron detection. The detectors are modular and can be optimized to the desired scale requirements. The Arktis detection system consists of modular neutron and gamma detectors, scalable high-speed electronics, software with proprietary analysis algorithms and a graphical user interface.
Among the most unique capabilities of our technology is its ability to detect fast neutrons directly, without use of a moderator. Only in this manner can neutron energy, direction, and timing information be obtained. The natural neutron background in the energy region of interest is very low, allowing an unprecedented sensitivity to weak or shielded sources. The use of low-background fast neutron detectors rather than thermal neutron detectors constitutes a paradigm shift, justified by the higher threat detection potential.
The main features of our detectors are:
- Energy information allows distinguishing fission sources from (a, n) sources
- Heavily shielded and weak sources detectable due to excellent signal/background ratio
- Excellent timing resolution (2 nanoseconds) allows for pulse shape discrimination, time-of-flight measurements, multiplicity counting, imaging and active interrogation applications
- Operation even in high gamma field (1 mSV/h demonstrated)
- Very low neutron background (0.01 cps/detector)
- Gamma counting up to 1 MHz
- Scalability to large arrays of detectors
- Same hardware can be optimized for neutron and gamma detection
Data Acquisition System
In close collaboration with PSI Villigen, Arktis developed WaveDREAM, a fast-digitizing (1-5GSPS) high-resolution data acquisition system. WaveDREAM is scalable and can be read out with Gigabit ethernet. For more information please contact info(at)arktis-detectors.com
